Nestled at the base of the majestic Anaimalai Hills, Aliyar Dam stands as a testament to engineering prowess and a haven of natural beauty. Located in the charming Aliyar village of Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, this earthen dam is a popular attraction, easily accessible from both Pollachi (24 km) and Valparai (43 km). More than just a functional structure, Aliyar Dam offers visitors a tranquil escape with picturesque views and recreational opportunities.
Constructed between 1959 and 1969 across the Aliyar River, the primary purpose of the dam was to provide irrigation for the surrounding agricultural lands. Inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on Oct 2, 1962, the dam has since become an important landmark in the region. In 2002, further enhancing its significance, the Aliyar Dam was commissioned to generate hydroelectric power. Standing at an imposing height of 81 meters, the dam is a remarkable sight within the foothills of the Western Ghats.
But Aliyar Dam is not just about its impressive engineering. The area surrounding the dam has been thoughtfully developed to cater to visitors. A well-maintained park at the bottom of the dam provides a perfect spot for relaxation and family fun. Here, you’ll find an aquarium, a mini-themed park, and a playground, all managed by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation.
The scenic beauty of the area is truly captivating. The panoramic views of the Anamalai range surrounding the reservoir are a feast for the eyes. Standing atop the dam, one can marvel at the lush coconut groves stretching out like a green carpet below. For those seeking a closer connection with the water, boating is available, offering another perspective of the beautiful landscape.
Aliyar Dam is a worthwhile stop on any itinerary heading to or from Valparai. Its strategic location makes it convenient to visit whether you’re making your way from Pollachi towards the hills, or returning from Valparai before or after exploring the nearby Monkey Falls.
